Modding Minecraft for Phishcraft

Instructions for configuring Minecraft to access the Phishcraft server.

Minecraft must not be running when you follow these instructions.

Step 1: Download and run the Fabric installer.

Download the installer from the Fabric website: Fabric installer →

When the file finishes downloading, open it.

macOS users: Click here to learn how to deal with the "unidentified developer" warning.

macOS users will see the following warning when attempting to open it:

macOS displaying an "unidentified application developer" security warning.

To open it, right click on the file in Finder and select Open, which will display a new variation of that window that now allows you to open the installer:

macOS

Click the Open button and proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Install Fabric

The Fabric installer should open with all the settings set the way we want, already:

the Fabric installer window

Just to be totally careful, make sure that...

  • you're on the "Client" tab
  • "Minecraft Version" is set to 1.18.2
  • "Loader Version" is the set to the most recent version
  • "Select Install Location" points to your Minecraft game directory (You'll only need to change this if you've already customized your installation with a custom game directory path. This only applies to advanced users, so you should know if you've done that.)
  • "Create profile" is checked

Once you've made sure that's all true, click the Install button.

Step 3: Create a Phishcraft "Installation"

Next, we'll customize the "Installation" that the Fabric installer created to be solely used for Phishcraft. That will ensure that you can still easily play un-modded "vanilla" Minecraft. It will also allow you to play on other servers where you don't want to use the Phishcraft mods.

Open Minecraft Launcher and then click on the "Installations" tab.

First, we're going to create a new directory to store Phishcraft-specific settings and mods. Hover over the installation named "Latest release" and click the button that the yellow arrow is pointing to in this screenshot:

the button to open the Minecraft game directory

Your operating system's file manager will open, showing the contents of the Minecraft game directory:

file manager showing the Minecraft game directory

(This directory may not have exactly the same contents on your system: it's totally fine if you don't see all the same files and directories in your window.)

Create a directory (if it doesn't already exist) named clients.

Then, inside the clients directory, create a directory named phishcraft-1.18:

Now, close the file manager window and switch back to Minecraft Launcher.

You should see an installation named fabric-loader-1.18.2, which the Fabric installer created because you had checked its "Create profile" option:

the Installations tab in Minecraft Launcher

Click on its name to edit the installation:

First, change the NAME to: Phishcraft

Next, click the GAME DIRECTORY setting's Browse button.

In the file browser that appears, select the phishcraft-1.18 directory that you just created:

After selecting it, you may want to check the displayed path to ensure that the correct directory was selected. You will probably have to scroll to view the whole path.

confirming the directory and name before saving

Once everything looks correct, click the Save button.

Step 4: Add the mods

You should be viewing the installations list again.

Click the button to open the Phishcraft installation's game directory in your file manager using the button that the yellow arrow is pointing to in this screenshot:

the button to open the Phishcraft game directory

Next, download the Phishcraft mod pack: Phishcraft Mods →

Move the mod pack ZIP file into the Phishcraft game directory and double click on it to extract its contents. This will create a directory named mods, containing several files:

the extracted mods

(Newer versions of the mod pack may not include exactly the same plugins you see in the screenshot.)

Step 5: Start the game

Now, start the Phishcraft installation: There are two ways to do this in Minecraft Launcher:

  • in the Installations tab, hover over the Phishcraft row and click the Play button that appears: the play button on the Installations tab
  • in the Play tab, ensure that the Phishcraft installation is selected in the drop-down menu indicated by the yellow arrow in the following screenshot, and then click the Play button: the play button on the Installations tab

Once the game loads, you'll see the main menu:

Step 6: Enable the Continuity resource packs

One of the mods we use is called Continuity. It makes some parts of the game look better by adding seamless textures to some blocks.

You need to enable two resource packs in the game's options in order to see the improved graphics.

In the Minecraft main menu, click Options and then click Resource Packs....

The settings screen that appears has two columns that list the available resource packs and selected resource packs. When you hover over an available resource pack, an arrow appears that indicates that clicking on it will move it to the "Selected" column. When you hover over a selected resource pack, arrows appear to deselect it and move it above or below other selected resource packs.

Locate and select the two Continuity resource packs and ensure that your settings match the following screenshot:

desired resource pack settings

Click Done to close the resource pack selection screen and then click Done to leave options and return to the main menu.

Step 7: Add the server

At the main menu, click Multiplayer and then click Add Server and enter the following server info:

Server Name: Phishcraft
Server Address: mincraft.phish.page

Phishcraft server info

Assuming everything looks good, click Done.

You will now see the server details listed in the Multiplayer menu:

Phishcraft server in the multiplayer menu

You're ready to join the server! There are two ways to do this:

  • click on any of the text in the Phishcraft server info and then click the Join Server button that the yellow arrow is pointing to in this screenshot: Join Server button
  • hover over the Phishcraft server info and click the play button that the yellow arrow is pointing to in this screenshot: play button

See you on there!
